ABOUT
The Maranao, or People of the Lake, of Mindanao (Southern Philippines), maintain relationship with their waters through embodied rituals; connecting, communicating, listening, and stewarding. This practice of oneness has allowed for the self-sustainability of the Maranao for generations.
Considering that “natural disasters are actually man-made,” and that the mistreatment of anything, including the environment, is destructive, in·corpus invites you to a workshop exploring the agency we have to orient towards climate repair through the embodied practices and encompassing worldview of an indigenous people.
WORKSHOP
Part history lesson, part dance class, this workshop will discuss the relationship between dance, ritual, and aquatic environments for the people of Mindanao, set against the backdrop of NY Climate Week and the Fall Equinox. Participants will learn the basic steps and movements used in ritual practices, focusing on the role of dance as an internal and external healing mechanism.
Dress for movement, malong (sarong) welcome. Open level, ages 7+.
