Queens Public Library at Woodside with New Americans Program presents

Filipino American Heritage Month: PAROPARO Kapagapir Dance of the Magical Butterfly

Get active and explore Filipino culture in this hands-on Kapagapir and Kakinikini dance workshop! Kapagapir is a traditional Maranao fan dance from the Philippines. The Maranao are a Filipino Muslim ethnic group primarily found around Lake Lanao in Mindanao. The graceful fan movements mimic the wings of the paru-paro, the Filipino word for butterfly. Participants will also learn Kakinikini, a dignified royal walk traditionally performed in Maranao dance. This interactive workshop is open to all ages and welcomes families and anyone interested in experiencing this vibrant cultural tradition.

This program is funded by New York State Assembly Member Claire Valdez.
